Combine Review – Defense
NFL 2013 Combine

March 12th 2013
Paul Emery analyses the performances from this years Combine and enters the data into his personal spreadsheet providing an overall unique Defensive rating.
The marquee event at the Combine is the 40 yard dash and for CB’s it’s more important than at any other position. For defensive lineman/3-4 outside linebackers the element which is most important is the 10 yard split time, simply the time it takes to run the first 10 yards of the 40 yard dash … ( full article )

January 16th 2013
eddie lacy Alabama RB Eddie Lacy racked up 20 carries for 140 yards and a TD plus 2 catches for 17 yards and a TD against Notre Dame in the BCS Championship. Lacy ran extremely well in the last two regular season games and continued that with another fine performance. Breaking tackles with his power and trademark spin move, he was too much for the Notre Dame defense. He also looked comfortable in pass protection, the highlight being a blitz pickup of Manti Te’o… ( full article )

Bowl Games Part Two
Draft Prospect Tracker Wk 16

January 14th 2013
alex okafor Texas DE Alex Okafor has a nice frame and does a really nice job of using that length to keep blockers off him. He was keeping a blocker off him as he knocked the ball out of the QB’s hands on his first big play of the day. He also showed a good get off and the ability to dip his inside shoulder to get low. Has some Aldon Smith traits – hasn’t been as consistent as Smith was in his junior campaign, but someone will find it hard to look past him as day two moves on…. ( full article )

margus hunt At the start of the year SMU DE Margus Hunt was rated as a first round pick by many, but his stock has dropped off and BYU’s Ziggy Ansah is the raw kid who has gained more ground. Hunt certainly got himself noticed playing against Fresno State making several big plays. Up against a freshman right tackle, his power was just too much for him and he had numerous other QB pressures. His relative inexperience tends to show up in two areas – he still plays a little high and he doesn’t feel screens, just running by them… ( full article )

Underclassmen declaring early
NFL Draft

February 6th 2013
Mike Edwards The official list from the NFL is now out and, as ever, there are a few surprises. Returning to school are Taylor Lewan (Michigan) and Jake Matthews (Texas A&M;) who may well have been first round picks. Georgia QB Aaron Murray also elected to return to school, presumably with an SEC championship on this mind. UCLA OLB Anthony Barr also decided to have another year, which will be his second at the position and seems to be a sensible decision… ( full article )

Laced with talent
Draft Prospect Tracker Wk 14

December 4th 2012
eddie lacy Both Alabama backs had monster days and Eddie Lacy finished with 181 yards on just 20 carries with 2 TD’s. Lacy showed a nice burst, both inside the tackles and outside. He broke tackles, including with his usual spin move, one of which led to a 32 yard run. This performance is a nice platform for him to jump to the NFL… ( full article )

Deja vu

November 28th 2012
tavon austin After the first two games of last year I said T.Y. Hilton might be a late first round pick. After struggling with injuries the rest of the way, he dropped to the late 3rd round. Fancy some deja vu? Having managed to stay healthy West Virginia WR Tavon Austin might very well be able to sneak into the first round. Like Hilton he’s a dynamic playmaker. He has wonderful moves in the open field and can change direction without slowing… ( full article )

Draft Prospect Tracker Wk 12

stepfan taylor There are a number of backs like Andre Ellington and Kenjon Barner in the 2012 draft class, but Stanford’s Stepfan Taylor is obviously a different animal. For a powerful back he also has some wiggle about him, with enough quickness to be able to redirect into a hole… ( full article )
