NFL Draft 2009NCAA Scouting - Player Profile:
Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
by James Izzard
22/3/2009

A notable trend of the 2009 prospects is there appears to be a high quantity of specialist pass rushers, defensive ends in college that will be best suited to playing OLB in a 3-4 on Sundays. Tyson Jackson goes against this quirk and is a stout run stuffing defensive end, it is most likely he goes tyson jacksonthe other way and will play as a 3-4 end in the NFL or maybe inside in the 4-3. The fact that 3-4 Ends are a rare breed in this year's class will help Jackson and could propel him to be a top 20 pick come April.

What we like about Tyson Jackson

At 6 foot 5 and 290 pounds Jackson has great size, a huge frame with long rangy arms that are used effectively to get around blocks to make tackles. Tyson Jackson is arguably the best defensive lineman against the run in this year's class. He is rarely pushed around by offensive lineman and holds his ground very well. The highest rated 3-4 end in the draft. Has played in the SEC for 3 years and faced good competition.

] Question marks over Tyson Jackson

He will not get you many sacks, bar his sophomore year his LSU career sack tally was low. I feel the scouts are spot on suggesting he will struggle making an impact as a 4-3 end. His repertoire of pass rush moves is limited and more often or not will try and beat his opponent with a bull rush; he will need to improve his technique to be successful in the NFL. Despite having good character this does not always transfer to the field where he does often appear to take plays off, at times just goes through the motions. Some question how important football is to him.

tyson jacksonHighlight of his College Career

Aside from winning the National Championship in 2007, the highlight of his career would have been his sophomore season where he registered 37 tackles, 10 for loss, and 8.5 sacks on his way to second-team All-SEC accolades.

Other Snippets of Info

An NFL player he compares to would be former LSU player and current Dallas Cowboy Marcus Spears.
He is reportedly a good team member and will be a positive dressing room influence.
He grew up in Louisiana and attended West St. John High School.
Will be suited to any team looking for a 3-4 end, notably Green Bay Packers, San Diego Chargers or Arizona Cardinals.
