NCAA Scouting - Player Profile:
Limas Sweed, WR
by Paul Hopkins
24/2/2008
Limas Sweed has been regarded as a first round wide receiver for the past couple of years now. Currently sitting atop Mike Mayock's board for wide receivers, Sweed should be able to capitalise on what is perceived to be a relatively weak wide receivers class (at least in comparison to 2007).
Sweed, who was a two-time All-Big 12 selection, finished his career with 124 receptions for 1,915 yards and 20 TDs in 43 games (39 straight starts). Despite being hampered by a wrist injury for most of the season, which eventually forced him to miss the last seven games, Sweed still managed to post 19 receptions for 306 yards and three TDs. In 2006, Sweed led the team with 46 catches for 801 yards and 12 TDs, which tied UT's single-season record.
What we like about Sweed
The Diner looks at Sweed and sees a prototype wide receiver. He was a huge frame, good speed, long arms and big hands. His size is undoubtedly a major attribute as it allows him to use his strength to beat the jam at the line of scrimmage. He can make the spectacular catch and has soft hands.
For a man of his size, he can make a strong leap for vertical balls, and is able to control his body well. His attitude is excellent as well, and he is not afraid to go across the middle and take a hit if need be.
Arguably his biggest asset is that in the big games, Sweed makes the big plays.
Question marks over Sweed
As with an player who virtually had their senior year wiped out through injury, Limas must show that the wrist is fine and that he is not fragile when it comes to injuries.
He has everything a number 1 receiver needs, with the possible exception of that elite level of speed. Consequently he may struggle to get separation from top cornerbacks. He is deceptively quick but how fast he runs the 40 will greatly impact on his overall draft position.
Highlight of his college career
Further proof that Sweed is a big time gamer, he recorded eight receptions (career high) for 65 yards in Texas' 41-38 victory over Southern California on their way to winning a National Championship.
Sweed will probably forever be remembered for making the game-winning catch in week 2 of the 2005 season, in the Horseshoe for the Longhorns. In addition to this he showed his ability to perform in the big time in the Rose Bowl against USC, gaining 65 on a career-high eight receptions in the victory over USC.
Other snippets
Limas' career stats at Texas see him ranked no. 6 on the University of Texas' all-time list for receptions, no. 2 on the all-time receiving TD list and number 5 on the all-time receiving yards list.
