Anthony McCoy
Tight End
Southern California
6-5, 259
Born: 12th December 1987
Senior
Strengths: Nice size, weight and good recorded speed. He has room to add a bit more bulk if desired. As a receiver he runs excellent routes, shows the ability to separate from defenders in man coverage as well as having a good feel for seams in zone coverage. He has soft hands and plucks the ball away from his body and will use his frame to shield defenders from the ball. He can stretch the field and when he catches the ball he immediately heads north rather than dancing around. He is not afraid to go over the middle and will fight for the football and earn every yard he gets. He has a good positional sense as a blocker and his footwork is solid. He has an excellent work ethic, plays and practices extremely hard.
Weaknesses: Despite an excellent looking skill set he has not been too productive in the college game. He has a mind blowing average per catch but has rarely taken over games and has been lost in the Trojans skill player shuffle. When going out for a pass he can sometimes release too slowly off the line and he needs to increase his sense of urgency. As a blocker he does not get much movement and lacks explosiveness.
Where I think he'll be drafted: His skill set and measurable added in with a pro style high profile college program should see McCoy off the board in round 3.
Where I think he should be drafted: I feel round 3 is about right. McCoy could be a starter in the NFL pretty quick. If a team like the Patriots or Bengals don't address their need for a tight end earlier McCoy would be a nice fit in round 3.
Summary: McCoy is a prospect who has a lot of what you want but you have to wonder why he never really stood out in the college ranks? Partly because of the program he was in he wasn't needed to be dominant so it is a fair assumption that he could actually be a much better pro than college ball player. He has the all the measurable team want to go along with a great attitude. In his college years, McCoy rarely seen the field as a freshman and sophomore due to been buried on the depth chart but when Fred Davis was drafted in 2008 he assumed the starting role and as a junior played in 13 games with 22 grabs for 256 yards and a TD. As a senior he played in 10 games (he missed winter scrimmage due to the fact he was academically ineligible) grabbing 22 balls again but this time for 457 yards a score. That 20.8 average per catch as a senior is an eye-popping stat though and will grab some attention. His one real breakout performance was against Notre Dame when he hauled in 5 passes for 153 yards (over 30 yards per catch). McCoy should have a solid NFL career and compares well to the guy he replaced at USC, Fred Davis. It's hard to tell whether he can ever be a dominant player or if he will just be a solid pro but any team drafting him should get a fair return.
