NFL Draft 2010 NCAA Scouting
Seventh Round Analysis
by Paul Emery
April 25th 2010

(208) Patriots (From Rams through Redskins) – Thomas Welch – OT – Vanderbilt – flashes some quickness setting up and could develop down the road.

(209) Bills (From Lions) – Levi Brown - QB – Troy – nice fit – Brown has a live arm – good enough for the bad weather in Buffalo. Good value to add to the QB mix.

(210) Buccaneers – Cody Grimm – SS - Virginia Tech – played LB in college, but projects to SS as a pro. Son of former Redskin Russ Grimm. Should star on special teams coverage.

(211) Rams (From Redskins) – Marquis Johnson - CB – Alabama – the NFL just loves Alabama CB's in this Draft – the third to go. Alabama's nickel back flashes some coverage ability.

(212) Dolphins (From Chiefs) – Chris McCoy – DE/OLB - Middle Tennessee State – latest small school DE to come off the board – another who flashed pass rush ability at a lower level, but has much to learn.

(213) Lions (From Seahawks) – Willie Young – DE/LB - North Carolina State – has very long arms – wiry build – needs to get stronger. Has flexibility and it will be interesting to see how the Lions use him.

(214) Vikings (From Browns through Lions) – Mickey Shuler - TE - Penn State – second Penn State TE to be drafted. Solid blocker – also decent short/medium range target.

(215) Raiders – Jeremy Ware – DB - Michigan State – typical Raiders pick – ran a 4.37 40 yard dash at his pro day.

(216) Bills – Kyle Calloway - OT – Iowa – more help at RT for the Bills. Calloway lacks top flexibility, but has decent technique and is a player who I like more than earlier pick Ed Wang.

(217) Buccaneers (From Jaguars)- Dekoda Watson - OLB - Florida State – played some DE in college – has pass rush ability. Excellent athlete has had durability problems.

(218) Bears – J'Marcus Webb - OT - West Texas AM – huge small schooler – moves pretty well for a big man – could develop down the road. Interesting developmental pick.

(219) Redskins (From Dolphins) – Terrence Austin - WR - UCLA – lacks top size, but could contribute as a Punt Returner and in the slot. Showed up nicely at the Shrine Game.

(220) Eagles (From Broncos through Lions) – Jamar Chaney - ILB - Mississippi State – missed the 2008 season with a knee injury. Excellent athlete who doesn't always play to his athletic ability – but worth a pick here.

(221) Giants – Matt Dodge - P - East Carolina – strong legged punter, who sometimes lacks top hang time. Can also kick off.

(222) Titans – Marc Mariani - WR - Montana – Jeff Fisher's son played for Montana – so clearly he saw something in Mariani while watching Brandon in action. Mariana has been very productive and has a chance.

(223) Panthers – RJ Stanford - CB – Utah – has decent speed – only a one year starter, but had Sean Smith ahead of him. Has coverage ability.

(224) 49ers – Phillip Adams - CB - South Carolina State – physical CB with good, but not great speed.

(225) Broncos (From Steelers through Buccaneers) – Syd'Quan Thompson - CB - California – another short and slow CB who will struggle to make it in my opinion. Better college player than pro prospect.

(226) Rams (From Falcons) – George Selvie - DE - South Florida – Selvie is the forgotten man in South Florida as JPP burst onto the scene. Has pass rush ability, but isn't a top athlete.

(227) Texans – Dorin Dickerson – TE/HB - Pittsburgh – another HB for Houston to go with Casey and Graham. Excellent athlete who flashed as a receiver – could even move to WR. Clearly not a need – so a best player available pick.

(228) Bengals – Reggie Stephens – OG - Iowa State – big mauler who lacks top athletic ability.

(229) Redskins (From Patriots) – Erik Cook – OG/OC - New Mexico – very tall Center who projects to Guard or even outside to Tackle. Has athletic ability and is a scheme fit.

(230) Packers – C.J. Wilson - DE - East Carolina – 3-4 DE projection – has marginal length for the position. More of a 4-3 type where he flashed some pass rush ability.

(231) Redskins (From Eagles through Broncos and Patriots) – Selvish Capers - OT - West Virginia – excellent athlete, who was all over the place technique wise. Nice scheme fit, but he has much work to do.

(232) Broncos (From Ravens through Buccaneers)- Jammie Kirlew – DE/OLB - Indiana – projection to 3-4 OLB – don't see it as a scheme fit as he's not athletic enough – tested out poorly at the Combine.

(233) Cardinals – Jim Dray – TE – Stanford – excellent blocker and reliable short range receiver. Has durability concerns.

(234) Cowboys – Sean Lissemore - DE - William & Mary – DT in college, projects to 3-4 DE in Dallas.

(235) Chargers – Dedrick Epps - TE – Miami – overshadowed by Jimmy Graham's emergence in 2009. Good effort player – has durability concerns.

(236) Seahawks (From Jets) – Dexter Davis - DE - Arizona State – lacks pro DE size, but is sudden off the edge – interesting Pac-10 selection by the Seahawks.

(237) Vikings – Ryan D'Imperio - ILB – Rutgers – tough ILB who will be ideal for special teams.

(238) Colts – Ricardo Mathews - DT - Cincinnati – played as a 3-4 DE – raw, but has good strength and flashes ability.

(239) Saints – Sean Canfield - QB - Oregon State – flashed some ability as a Senior, but lacks top accuracy. Decent enough developmental type though.

(240) Colts (Compensatory selection) – Kavell Conner - OLB – Clemson – good value at this point – very productive LB who is athletic enough to make it.

(241) Titans (Compensatory selection) – David Howard - DT – Brown – strong and smart player who shows enough against double teams to get a late round look.

(242) Steelers (Compensatory selection) – Doug Worthington – DE - Ohio State – played DT in college – projects to 3-4 DE. Has the length to play the position – has had durability issues.

(243) Eagles (Compensatory selection) – Jeff Owens – DT – Georgia – was rated as a high pick before a 2008 knee injury. Very strong – holds up very well against the double team and is a great pick at this point in proceedings.

(244) Eagles (Compensatory selection) – Kurt Coleman - SS - Ohio State – lacks top size for the position as a pro – not a super athlete, but should contribute on special teams.

(245) Seahawks (Compensatory selection) - Jameson Konz – FB/HB - Kent State – workout warrior who many projected to go much higher on this basis.

(246) Colts (Compensatory selection) – Ray Fisher - CB – Indiana – small corner, who is a converted WR that can also help in the return game.

(247) Patriots (Compensatory selection) – Brandon Deaderick – DE – Alabama – has experience of a complex defensive system – used as a 3-4 DE and 4-3 DT. Has long arms – ideal for the 3-4. Flashed on tape, but doesn't consistently get off blocks.

(248) Patriots (Compensatory selection) – Kade Weston - NT - Georgia – the final of the three Georgia DT's to be drafted. Holds up well at the line – interesting pick – do they not like Ron Brace from last year – or could they be looking for Weston to play at DE?

(249) Panthers (Compensatory selection) – Robert McClain - CB – Connecticut – another short CB – but at least McClain can run.

(250) Patriots (Compensatory selection) – Zac Robinson - QB - Oklahoma State – had a decent Senior Bowl. Has a decent enough arm, but accuracy was an issue – Dez Bryant made him look better than he was.

(251) Raiders (Compensatory selection) – Stevie Brown – SS – Michigan – played LB in college, will need to move back to Safety. Tough player who will be great on special teams.

(252) Dolphins (Compensatory selection) – Austin Spitler – ILB - Ohio State – one year starter – has been a special teams ace and projects here as a pro.

(253) Buccaneers (Compensatory selection) – Erik Lorig - DE - Stanford – has good size and works hard – but has had durability issues.

(254) Rams (Compensatory selection) – Josh Hull - ILB - Penn State – smart and tough – decent enough athletically to believe he can me more than a special teams ace, which he will be early on.

(255) Lions (Compensatory selection) – Tim Toone - WR - Weber State – over aged prospect (25 years of age) with excellent speed – could help in the return game.

Summary

Best Pick: Josh Hull – ILB – Rams – next to last pick – really enjoyed watching him play on tape – believe he has enough to be more than just a special teams star.

Worst Pick: Syd'Quan Thompson – CB – Broncos – with the combination of height, speed and vertical jump – I don't think he has the numbers to make it.

Best Value: Jeff Owens – DT – Eagles – if his knee gets to 100% this could be a real steal – holds up well against the double team.

QB: Tim Hiller – Western Michigan; Jevan Snead – Mississippi (came out early to go undrafted); Jarrett Brown – West Virginia; Matt Nichols – Eastern Washington.
