Second Round Analysis

A pick by pick look at the Second Round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
 
1 (33) Rams - Rodger Saffold - OT – Indiana – after drafting Bradford, the Rams take Saffold who might be able to play RT – flashes quick feet, but can struggle with pure edge speed. Could end up at G.
 
2 (34) Vikings (From Lions) - Chris Cook - CB - Virginia – big Corner who can run – did have some off the field concerns, but the Vikings ignore Clausen for the future and take Cook.
 
3 (35) Buccaneers - Brian Price - DT – UCLA – after taking McCoy in the first round this is a very interesting pick – the Bucs completely retool at DT. Similar player to McCoy – main concern is conditioning as he rotated heavily in college.
 
4 (36) Chiefs – Dexter McCluster - RB/WR – Mississippi – played RB and WR in college – can line up all over the field and help in the return game. Quicker than fast – just get him the ball in space.
 
5 (37) Eagles – Nate Allen - FS - South Florida – might normally expect to be the top rated FS – but with Berry and Thomas around this year, he is still here in Round 2. Excellent value for a guy who has the speed needed for a modern day Safety.
 
6 (38) Browns – T.J. Ward – FS – Oregon – big hitter who doesn't have the best frame – thus has had durability concerns and wasn't expected to be gone this early. One pick after Allen, this looks like a poor pick.
 
7 (39) Buccaneers (From Raiders) - Arrelious Benn - WR – Illinois – big target who had a down year as the result of poor QB play – needs to work on catching the ball away from his body.
 
8 (40) Dolphins (From Seahawks through Chargers) Koa Misi – DE/OLB – Utah – Miami ignore Kindle and go with Misi who plays the game at 100 mph. Raw in space. A little like KC's Tamba Hali.
 
9 (41) Bills - Torell Troup – NT - Central Florida – my top rated NT. Rated by most websites as a third or fourth rounder. Holds up well at the point of attack and has more pass rush ability than the other NT prospects.
 
10 (42) Patriots (From Bears through Buccaneers and Raiders) - Rob Gronkowski - TE – Arizona – missed all last season after surgery on his back. The Patriots gamble that he can stay healthy. All around TE.
 
11 (43) Ravens (From Dolphins through Broncos) - Sergio Kindle – DE/OLB – Texas – top 15 talent – but concerns about his past DUI/character and also his knee. If he stays healthy and out of trouble this could be a steal. Great fit in Baltimore where Ray Lewis can hold him accountable.
 
12 (44) Raiders (From Jaguars through Patriots ) - Lamarr Houston – DT – Texas – one gap penetrator who had a nice senior year to elevate his stock. Good triangle numbers – but not great – so not a typical Raiders type for the second round in a row.
 
13 (45) Broncos - Zane Beadles – OT/OG – Utah – might be able to play OT in the Broncos system in an emergency – excellent technician and character.
 
14 (46) Giants - Linval Joseph - DT - East Carolina – Junior entry who moved up boards with a superb combine. Very similar pick to JPP in Round One – raw – has upside, but can be classified as a second boom or bust pick.
 
15 (47) Cardinals (From Titans through Patriots) - Daryl Washington - LB – TCU – a very poor scheme pick for me on a prospect who fell to this spot - the second worrying pick from the Cards. Washington lacks bulk to play in a 3-4 – he has long arms, but will need a year or two to get stronger. WLB in a 4-3 for me.
 
16 (48) Panthers - Jimmy Clausen - QB - Notre Dame – Clausen finally comes off the board. Character and leadership concerns drop him. Perhaps Matt Moore isn't the QB of the future...
 
17 (49) 49ers – Taylor Mays - FS – USC – superb athlete who isn't the best football player – takes bad angles and misses too many tackles. Thought he might drop down to WLB – but he's not a 3-4 type. Boom or bust.
 
18 (50) Chiefs (From Falcons) - Javier Arenas – CB – Alabama – a poor pick here for me. Arenas is under 5'9” and ran a slow 4.60 40 yard dash at the Combine. Great returner in college – but does he have the speed to project to the NFL?
 
19 (51) Vikings (From Texans) Toby Gerhart - RB – Stanford – violent runner who is a better athlete than given credit for. Some had him as a FB, but he's a TB for me – tough to tackle – particularly late in games.
 
20 (52) Steelers – Jason Worilds – DE/OLB - Virginia Tech – a nice 10 yard split time makes Worilds a 2nd round pick. Goes above others who might have been considered. May need some time to develop – particularly playing in space.
 
21 (53) Patriots - Jermaine Cunningham – DE/OLB – Florida – surprising pick – one trick pony off the edge at Florida. Another DE convert who will need to play in space.
 
22 (54) Bengals – Carlos Dunlap - DE – Florida – when will the Bengals learn? Character is so important and for the second year in a row they take a massive risk on a player with major character concerns (DUI before the SEC Championship Game). Horrible pick.
 
23 (55) Cowboys (From Eagles ) - Sean Lee - ILB - Penn State – I thought Lee projected best to a 3-4 ILB and Jerry Jones agrees. After taking a gamble on character with Dez Bryant – they take one of the top character players in the Draft. If his knee is healthy, this is a fine pick.
 
24 (56) Packers - Mike Neal – DE – Purdue – has borderline length to play as a 3-4 DE. Neal flashes great ability, but needs to become more consistent. Question the fit to the 3-4.
 
25 (57) Ravens - Terrence Cody – NT – Alabama – the Ravens take another gamble. Cody has battled with weight issues and may eat himself out of the league. One of the best places he could have landed, but if Coach Saban couldn't motivate Cody to lose weight, then can the Ravens?
 
26 (58) Texans (From Cardinals through Patriots) - Ben Tate - RB – Auburn – the Texans missed out on Ryan Mathews in the First Round, so take Tate here. Big back who has the speed to get outside.
 
27 (59) Browns (From Cowboys through Eagles) – Montario Hardesty - RB – Tennessee – battled injury concerns throughout his career, but had a fine Senior year to move up boards. Powerful runner who runs low to the ground. Nice fit in Cleveland – I can see him having big days in bad weather.
 
28 (60) Seahawks (From Chargers) - Golden Tate - WR - Notre Dame – Coach Carroll follows on from two nice picks in the First Round to get good value here. Tate has excellent run after the catch and return ability and should help right away in the slot. Seattle having a superb Draft so far.
 
29 (61) Jets - Vlad Ducasse – OT/OG – Massachusetts – borderline OT/OG type – powerful player from a small school. Still raw – might start out at G.
 
30 (62) Patriots (From Vikings through Texans) Brandon Spikes - ILB – Florida – after a poor pro day 40 time, Spikes value fell – but the Patriots take him on the basis of his excellent tape. Better player than athlete – very physical.
 
31 (63) Colts - Pat Angerer - LB – Iowa – odd pick – has Colts LB size – but lacks the usual top speed they look for. Has very short arms, so needed to play in a 4-3 – but a head scratcher this high.
 
32 (64) Saints - Charles Brown – OT – USC – rated as a first rounder by many – a fall as the 2nd run on OT's never really got going in this round. If the Saints can get him to stay on his feet more and get stronger, he could be a fine pick.
 
Summary
 
Best Pick: Sean Lee – Cowboys. Great player and character – excellent scheme fit - love the pick.
 
Worst Pick: Carlos Dunlap - Bengals. Following Rey Maualuga's post season DUI – the Bengals have shown the organisation does not have the support structures in place for these character risk players. If Dunlap and Maualuga get together on a night out – anything could happen. Worst pick of the Draft so far.
 
Best Value: Sergio Kindle – Ravens and Jimmy Clausen – Panthers – the two big fallers from Day One. In terms of “clean” players – Nate Allen – FS – Eagles.
 
Worst Value: Pat Angerer – Colts. Rated as a 5th or 6th round type by most media outlets.
 
Biggest Surprise: The Bucs going DT again surprised me as did Clausen heading to Carolina where Matt Moore was expected to start with Jake Delhomme having been cut – Moore's confidence could take a knock.
