Which RB Mav?
Larry: In my keeper league's upcoming draft I need to make picks 27 and 30 count. I've already got Adrian Peterson and Shonne Greene and will take a top receiver at 27, and I'm targeting one of Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, Michael Bush, CJ Spiller. Which one would you select?
Maverick:
Ahoy hoy Larry. Looks like you are in a frankly corking position heading into your draft. With AP and Shonn already on board – and assuming you do get a solid no.1 receiver at 27 – you’re in a terrific position to nab a RB3 with upside.
Let’s be frank, it doesn’t look like Brandon Jacobs is going to fit the bill. His stock is sliding fast what with nagging injury and the seeming ascension of the next back you mention, Bradshaw. But I still think Jacobs is poised for something of a bounce back if given the right opportunities – and brittle Bradshaw may yet give him an in as the season progresses. Still, Jacobs’ stock is so low you can wait on him and pick him up a round or two later.
Conversely, Bradshaw’s stock is high. He’s a dynamic runner and receiver on a decent offense and seems to have won the number one job outright. But I don’t see Bradshaw making it through the year unhurt – he walks with a limp even now, and won’t be a good bet for much more than 200 carries. That said, he might well pick up a ton of receptions along the way.
Bush is also riding a kind of high. Has he locked up the number one job over Darren MacFadden? Even if he has, he’s averaged just 3.8 yards per carry this pre-season and has struggled at the goal line. With MacFadden back healthy at last, his ceiling is limited.
Then there’s Spiller. Call me a rookie lover (on second thoughts, you’d better not) but there’s something about Spiller’s bouncy, go-get-em fresh legs I like a lot. You’ll have seen the 31 yard touchdown run he ripped off in week two of the pre-season, and there’s reason to think he might get up to similar tricks when the real season begins, because no amount of in-season scheming can account for the laws-of-physics defying moves he busted. With Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch nicked up, Spiller’s time is now – as long as the Bills’ hotch potch offensive line can hold up just a little and Lee Evans can occasionally get open downfield.
So Larry, for me it boils down to Bradshaw or Spiller.
