7th Wonder of the World

demaryius thomas John Magsy: Should I draft DeMaryius 'Bay Bay' Thomas or Golden Tate with the seventh pick in a rookie dynasty draft?

Maverick: John Boy, there are those who will tell you you’ve missed out on the serious talent by not selecting in the top six picks of a rookie dynasty draft, but I ain’t one of them.

Yes, Dez Bryant, Ryan Matthews, Jahvid Best, CJ Spiller, Ben Tate and Montario Hardesty should be the top six picks in your draft (and in that order, in my opinion), but you could do a lot worse than Bay Bay or Golden (both of whom boast first names which make them sound like the cast of an adult entertainment film rather than football players, but I digress).

That is, as long as you have time wait, because neither will be winning you games for several years.

Thomas is a physical monster who was drafted above Dez Bryant on his own merits, not just because Bryant is the next in a long line of receiver divas. Tate is no slouch either – he’s already dazzled with short area quickness in Seahawks camp and should win a major role early.

But both have alarming quarterback situations for the future, where Charlie Whitehurst and Tim Tebow stand out as giant question marks moving forward.

I think this is what separates the two above all else: Thomas, in particular, has the skills to overcome that handicap in the same kind of way Calvin Johnson thrived in Detroit two years ago even when Dan Orlovsky was throwing him the ball. But Tate strikes me as more of a Eddie Royal type who’ll need the right system around him to generate points.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Tate will make an impact sooner as the more NFL ready player. But Thomas will be the better pro assuming his ongoing foot issues don’t derail his career. If healthy, bank on him breaking out in and around his third season in the same kind of way Roddy White did for the Falcons.

So – as long as you get to keep your protected players ad infinitum in your dynasty league – Bay Bay’s the guy.

But don’t expect much pay back before 2012 old boy.
