Dynasty rooks
Freshy updated, let's look at who will have the most value in Dynasty league drafts. I am looking for two things. Firstly ability to make an impact this year, and secondly long term value. ie can I trade a player away next offseason? For example a player doesn't necessarily need to have a knock out season in 2010 to have trade value next year so long as they are in a good position. These parameters will depend on the scheme they play in and the players (competition for starting job) around them.
(Position taken in NFL draft in italics)
1. Ryan Mathews RB Chargers1st round - Dropping this powerful back who can also bounce outside if needed into an already fantastic offense in need of a runner is a fantasy dream come true. Shout Matthews on draft day as loud as your larynx will allow.
2. Jahvid Best RB Lions1st round - He's explosive and talented and has rare cut back ability. With Kevin Smith's career taking coffin measurements we can only dream what Best's speed may achieve on Detroit's turf.
3. C.J. Spiller RB Bills1st round - CJ is a lightning RB who can score as a runner, receiver or return specialist. It should be only a matter of time before Lynch is on another team and Fred Jackson is looking back at 2009 with teary eyed fondness.
4. Dez Bryant WR Cowboys1st round - Both of my ear drums blew from Tony Romo's scream of delight when Dallas grabbed Bryant. The Cowboys could well have the best pair of WRs they have had in years.
5. Demaryius Thomas WR Denver1st round - Whilst slow off the line and only recording a 4.6 time, this 6-foot-3 WR has nice run after the catch ability and replaces Brandon Marshall who recorded nice stats in this system. Denver needed a replacement #1 and may have found him.
6. Mike Williams WR Buccs4th round - He quit on his college team half way through the season causing his stock to fall on draft day, however it now looks like the Buccs may have found the steal of the draft. Already pushing 2nd round pick Arrelious Benn down the depth chart, 2010 could finally see a player named Mike Williams clock up a productive season.
7. Golden Tate WR Seahawks2nd round - It's a shame that Golden didn't go to a better system, but his explosive play and smart instincts could mean he rises to the top of the depth chart very soon indeed. And with TJ gone it's a golden opportunity. (awww!)
8. Emmanuel Sanders WR Steelers 3rd round - With Holmes shipped out the Steelers need a deep threat, and Sanders' college total of 34 tds is threatening enough for me. It's just a shame that Mike Wallace is floating around.
9. Sam Bradford QB Rams1st round - Despite promises that he won't be rushed into a starting job a strong showing in the preseason has made everyone sit up and take notice. With the success of rook QBs in recent years it's tough not to take the overall number one for future trade value.
10. Rob Gronkowski TE Patriots 2nd round - Rob is athletic and a determined runner with an ability to break tackles. The rich get richer and Tom Brady just can't believe his luck.
11. Jonathan Dwyer RB Steelers6th round - His slow 40 time (4.67) meant he dropped like a stone on draft day. Luckily he dropped to Pittsburgh where his power running style is not unfamiliar. RBs are worth far more then WRs so he is worth stashing. He is only one Mendenhall injury away from a chance at big numbers.
12. Jermaine Gresham TE Bengals1st round - Is 2010 finally the year that Carson Palmer gets back on track? We have seen suggestions it may be so why not have a crack at this great hand catcher who can accelerate up field with ease.
13. Aaron Hernandez TE Patriots4th round - He's not much cop at blocking, but his great hands and athletic ability add to the growing Patriot TE stock.
14. Jordan Shipley WR Bengals3rd round - A skilled route runner who can make the clutch catch. TO and Ochocinco may clear out some room for Shipley to have a chance to shine.
15. Eric Decker WR Broncos 3rd round - Denver were keen to sure up the wide out position so added Decker to the mix. Don't do an A-Team and avoid this Colonel.
16. Ben Tate RB Texans2nd round - Houston were desperate for help at RB with Slaton blowing out in 2009, Sadly Tate is lost for 2010. He is a feature back waiting to happen...but fantasy owners now have quite a wait on their hands.
17. Montario Hardesty RB Browns 2nd round - Montario is a physical back with a burst to turn the corner. He has the ability to be a feature type back but a season ending injury has meant it's 'next year' for another rookie RB. Still, RBs are fantasy gold so he is worth stashing.
18. Anthony Dixon RB 49ers6th round - His draft day stock fell with lack of speed. Some impressive yardage in preseason opened eyes and with it a jump up fantasy draft boards now Coffee has retired.
19. Stephen Williams WR Cardinalsundrafted - Undrafted rookie Williams made some noise in the preseason. If only the QB situation was more stable I would be tempted to take this guy a little higher
20. Mardy Gilyard WR Rams4th round - With Avery done for the year the door is open for Gilyard to showcase his elusive play and good body control in St.Louis.
21. Brandon LaFell WR Panthers 3rd round - LaFell fell on draft day, but his versatility, athletic ability and great concentration should mean that he will be the 2nd receiver as quick as you can say "bench Matt Moore". Regardless though he has high potential with the ability to play any of the three positions.
22. Arrelious Benn WR Buccs2nd round - It's a shame this big target landed in the WR hell of Tampa Bay. Matters were made worse when he failed to impress anyone and saw Mike Williams move past him. He is still a 2nd round pick however so don't cross his name out just yet.
23. Dexter McCluster RB/WR Chiefs2nd round - He's the next Reggie Bush having been moved from RB to WR. Whether that is good news or not is debatable. His ceiling won't be more than 50 receptions from the slot however.
24. Toby Gerhart RB Vikings2nd round - Everyone seems to be in love with this powerful hard to tackle RB. But has anyone heard of Adrian Peterson? Gerhart may steal some time and grab goal line chances but he does not have a full diary ahead of him in 2010. Let someone else reach for him.
25. Damian Williams WR Titans3rd round - Dare we believe that Vince Young has turned the corner? If it's true it's time to load up on Titan WRs (it's been a while since you heard that) and Williams is an NFL ready route runner with sure hands.
26. Taylor Price WR Patriots3rd round - A 3 year starter and Ohio's all-time leading WR. Landing in an already potent offense get's me salivating. With Wes Welker's health in at least slight doubt Taylor could be at just the right price as a late round flyer.
27. Joe McKnight RB Jets 4th round - With Leon Washington history the explosiveness and versatility of McKnight will see some production. Do not expect anything more than 3rd down numbers this year at best however.
28. Jimmy Clausen QB Panthers 2nd round - You have got to listen when a QB gets taken in the 2nd round, especially when he only has Matt Moore ahead of him.
29. Jimmy Graham TE Saints 3rd round - He played only one year of football in college but it was a good one. New Orleans is a great place for anyone who wants to catch the ball and Graham can learn from Shockey.
30. Tim Tebow QB Broncos 1st round - He has got to go somewhere, that's what fantasy and Denver owners alike are saying. Sadly his inevitable lack of 2010 stats will make trading him for future value very difficult.
31. Antonio Brown WR Steelers 6th round - He had an ultra productive college career and has good field vision, and Pittsburgh gets a lot of production from WRs that are deep on their depth charts.
32. Ed Dickson TE/HB Ravens 3rd round - The Ravens need security for Todd Heap. They took two this year to cover themselves which means it's a lottery for fantasy owners. Will the future be the natural pass-catching talent of Dickson, or...
33. John Skelton QB Cardinals5th round - With only Derek Anderson on board the Cardinals top brass protected themselves by taking a QB with classic size and a great arm...it won't be long before Skelton gets a chance to show his wares.
34. Jacoby Ford WR Raiders 4th round - He's super fast (4.28) and he's a natural Raider. Now that Russell has eaten himself out of Oakland at least new starter Jason Campbell gives Oakland WRs a chance at doing something worthwhile.
35. Armanti Edwards WR Panthers 3rd round - The wildcat is just a pain as far as fantasy is concerned, it's participants just don't see the field enough to warrant talking about. But perhaps Edwards can carve out some decent time as WR alone.
36. Andrew Quarless TE Packers 5th round - Green Bay also enjoy employing TEs in their schemes so a quick glance at Quarless is what both you and Aaron Rodgers may often be doing.
37. Dennis Pitta TE Ravens 4th round - ...the consistent blocking, nice route running, and dependable hands of Dennis Pitta. Pinning a tale on the donkey is a better gamble.
38. Riley Cooper WR Eagles 5th round - Inconsistent hands and a young QB push him down. But he's a big threat and just maybe Kolb will be a star.
39. Andre Roberts WR Cardinals3rd round - If Kurt were still around I would be a whole heap more excited about Roberts. He is a great route runner with good hands. He is however not more than a developmental pick with the question mark on Leinart.
40. Tony Moeaki TE Chiefs 3rd round - Could he be the next great Tony at tight end in Kansas? His great hands and nice run after the catch ability say yes.
41. Charles Scott RB Cardinals 6th round - The Eagles didn't waste much time in shipping Charles Scott out to Arizona. As far as we need to know, that's all she wrote. Next!
42. Levi Brown QB Bills7th round - What are the Bills doing? Doesn't years of terrible QB production tempt them to do anything about it? Brown has a live arm that could be good enough for the bad weather in Buffalo; but is he the future? He can't be any worse than what they have now.
43. Colt McCoy QB Browns 3rd round - Mike Holmgren says he doesn't plan on starting McCoy in 2010. He also plans that Jake Delhomme will play well. Grab McCoy and wait for his chance.
44. David Reed WR Ravens 5th round - An interesting prospect who only started one year at Utah. Has good hands and decent speed and with the Ravens O coming alive now may be the time to stock up with Baltimore WRs.
45. Deji Karim RB Jaguars6th round - The Jaguars have put up some decent RB figures so my fantasy Mr Irrelevant goes to the So.Illinois product with good athletic ability and quick feet.
46. Kerry Meier WR Falcons 5th round - Another former QB who moved to WR. He lacks top speed, but has decent hands and is a smart player.
47. Clay Harbor TE Eagles 4th round - The Eagles get good numbers from their TEs, so spending a pick on this good receiver with potential may be worth a shout.
48. Garrett Graham TE/HB Texans 4th round - He's just like Owen Daniels. Snap! We've got two. A hand catcher with a knack to get open and good effort blocker.
49. Marcus Easley WR Bills 4th round - He has great potential but is still learning the position. Sadly when he looks back from downfield he won't see any teachers behind the line of scrimage unless my #35 pick gets a shot.
50. Joe Webb QB/WR Vikings 6th round - Superb athlete played QB the past two years but projects to WR in the NFL. Percy Harvin's success has everyone looking at the Vikings WRs these days.
